At A4L, black soldier fly production is part of our circular farming model. We use organic waste streams to produce larvae that can contribute to fish feed formulation — reducing waste, creating value from organic materials, and supporting more affordable aquaculture.
§ VWhy black soldier fly
The cheapest input is the one nobody else wants.
Black soldier fly larvae are voracious recyclers. They convert organic waste — kitchen scraps, brewery residues, market leftovers, agricultural by-products — into dense, protein-rich biomass in a matter of days.
That biomass, dried and milled, becomes a meaningful component of fish feed formulations. The result is cheaper feed, less waste headed for landfill, and a farm that closes more of its own loops.
Black soldier fly production also forms part of our training programmes for farmers, youth and children — helping them understand how waste can become a valuable resource rather than a problem to manage.

BSF rearing is one of the most popular lessons in our Generation Game Changers programme. Children see, in a matter of days, that what looks like waste is actually energy and protein waiting to move along the chain.
A simple loop
- 1.Organic waste collected from kitchens, markets, and farms.
- 2.Substrate seeded with young BSF larvae.
- 3.Larvae consume the substrate over 7–14 days.
- 4.Mature larvae harvested — fed live, or dried and milled.
- 5.Adult flies cycle back to lay the next generation of eggs.
