Cycling a new aquaponics system, patiently
A short, honest guide to the most boring — and most important — month of an aquaponics build.
The hardest sentence we ever say to an aquaponics client is the one about waiting. They have paid for a system. The tanks are full. The pumps are humming. And we have just told them they cannot stock fish for a month. There is no good way to make that sound exciting — but it is the single most important conversation in the build.
§ IWhat cycling actually is
An aquaponic system is not just plumbing and gravel; it is a microbial community. The bacteria that convert fish-waste ammonia into nitrite, and nitrite into nitrate, take time to colonise the biofilter. Until they are established, the water is toxic to fish at modest stocking densities. Cycle properly and you have a stable, forgiving system. Skip it and you will lose your first batch of fish — and probably your second.
- 1.Fill the system and run it. Pumps on, water moving through the biofilter and grow beds.
- 2.Add an ammonia source — we typically use a small amount of ammonium chloride or a fish-free organic source — to feed the colonising bacteria.
- 3.Test daily. Ammonia rises, then falls. Nitrite rises, then falls. Nitrate accumulates.
- 4.Plant leafy greens early — they tolerate the cycling water and start the plant side of the loop.
- 5.Once ammonia and nitrite read at zero, the system is cycled. Now stock fish, gently, in batches.
The whole process is typically four to six weeks. Faster is possible with a seeded biofilter from an established system, but the discipline of testing every day is non-negotiable. A test kit is the second-most-important piece of equipment you will buy.

§ IIWhat we tell clients
We will not deliver fingerlings to a system we have not cycled or supervised through cycling. We are not being precious — we are protecting the farmer from a loss that would otherwise be blamed on the fingerlings or the fish. By the time fish arrive at a new A4L-built system, the biofilter has been doing its quiet, invisible work for weeks.
